Behind the Wall Racing Apparel has crossed the “Pond” and welcomes Sophie Fisher from
Wiltshire, UK. We asked Sophie a few questions about herself and her racing career and we
would like to share what she had to say…
Sophie got her first taste of racing at the age of 9, when her Dad took her out to their local track
to watch the British Touring Cars run, and since that time it has been Sophie’s ambition to
become a Touring Car Driver!
“I started racing when I was 11, at a local Saturday kart school. After a year the school shut
down but I still wanted to kart so I managed to persuade my Dad to let me test a Rotax Max
kart” Sophie says about how she actually got started in racing. “After several test days and
getting my racing license I signed up to compete in a full championship in the new Water
Cooled Rotax Max Class.”
Over the course of the next 4 years, Sophie did more than compete; she won the Junior
Championship and had the opportunity to appear on British television. Sophie was also invited
to appear on “Blue Peter”, a BBC children’s television show, with Lewis Hamilton a former
British karting champion and current Formula 1 Driver. And the most impressive fact, Sophie
was the first female driver in the world to compete in the Rotax Max karting class
In 2005 Sophie had decided to move up from kart racing to cars and took her car ARDS
(Association of Racing Drivers Schools) test. She then spent 2006 testing in and raced a
Caterham, which is a lightweight sport car that is part of the British Motor Industry.
2007 finds Sophie taking a break from racing to concentrate on her work as a model and her
plans to start her own events business. But don’t think Sophie is done with racing, as she plans
to return full time by the end of the year to compete in the Clio Cup. The Clio Cup is seen as a
key stepping stone to touring car and GT racing. Similar to the popularity of NASCAR here in
the States, the Clio Cup is watched every race weekend by the UK’s biggest motor sports crowds
and also extensive media coverage with audiences every weekend of around 300,000 fans!
So getting back to our initial question, where do you want to go with your racing, Sophie
answers quite simply and with clear certainty, “My ultimate ambition is to compete in Touring
cars and I’d love to do 24 Hours at Le Man’s”
