Debbie has been a racing fan since age 3, but being a single Mom restricted her
involvement for many years. At one time, Debbie managed a restaurant on the route to
Hickory Speedway in North Carolina. There she met many racing greats including Dale
Earnhart, who became something of a hero to her. When she remarried, husband Gene
White loved racing too, and they began to take in the action at Greenville-Pickens
Speedway. Some time later, her son Chris Black started driving at the track. Now
Debbie was really hooked. For her birthday, her husband gave her a “ride along” at
Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte, and after three laps, Debbie just knew that she
had to race.

From that moment on, Gene supported Debbie's dream. They bought a car for $200 and
he acted as crew chief, mechanic and icon of inspiration as Debbie learned to turn a
wrench and use a grinder. Next came bondo, sanding and painting the car. Whether
Debbie is working on the car or racing, Gene is her greatest confidence builder and
source of support.

As a single mother, Debbie never had time or money for racing schools, and her initial
practice time involved taking her son's car on and off the trailer and driving it around
the yard. On Mothers' Day she raced for the first time and placed better than her son;
since then she hasn't missed a race.

In 2002 Debbie's 1983 Monte Carlo got a new purple paint job that stood out at
Greenville-Pickens Speedway. She was in 10th place in the standings and planed on a
top ten finish to the season. For the 2007 racing season, Debbie is going to sit out as far
as full time goes to help her son with his racing. However, according to Debbie, “I may
run a few selected races this year as a stand in for a friend of mine”.
